Gene bank for wild species promotes biodiversity with economic benefits in southwest China
Among the many conservation efforts undertaken by Yunnan Province in southwest China, its wildlife bank stands out for improving the area’s biodiversity and bringing benefits visible to the local people.
Known for its biodiversity, Yunnan Province in southwestern China has many nicknames — fauna, flora, and garden of the world.
In its efforts to protect its incredibly diverse wildlife, one of the province’s proudest achievements is the world’s second largest wildlife bank, established the provincial capital Kunming 17 years ago.
As of this year, the bank has collected and stored more than 20,000 types of wild germs – genes found in reproductive cells or plant cells.
“The bank is made up of five major sections including seeds, in vitro plant materials, plant DNA, biological materials, and animal biological resources,” said Yi Tingshuang, director. of the Germplasm Bank of Wild Species in Southwest China.
The discovery, research and protection of biological resources are considered very important for the conservation of biodiversity.
Studies on other viruses have even shown potential therapeutic effects in cancer treatment.
“We have saved a lot of germplasm resources, the next step is to focus on how to use them effectively to meet the important needs of the country and benefit people. This area needs to be strengthened and needs development more,” said Yi.
For many years, China has been a pioneer in encouraging the public to participate in wildlife conservation. Guiding citizens to take advantage of the economic benefits of conservation efforts is a key factor.
“For example, we can give our seeds to the local people, telling them that the seeds we have planted have high medicinal value. By encouraging them to plant these seeds instead of harvesting them wild, this approach can provide a more effective conservation solution,” said Shen Jianyong, deputy director of the Center for Horticulture and Horticulture at the Xishuangbanna Tropical Plant Center.
Conservation of wildlife is a shared responsibility of all people. In the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, a cross-border scientific research project has been established. Experts are also eager to deepen cooperation with international institutions and researchers, to contribute to the world’s biodiversity.
